About Us

Beary Cheap Bear Supplies have been established since 1994. As with many crafts our mail order business grew from a hobby in the Australian Bush. Read the story of our early days.

Direct application is very simple although it can be a bit messy. We suggest you do it in your garage or somewhere that is easily cleaned up. It is not advisable to work in sunlight as the light will affect the strength of the dye & under bright sunlight it is difficult to tell what the finished colour will look like. "Mo-Dye" has been designed for mohair and takes well to the pile and fabric backing.

Decide what colours you are going to use and mix up a solution of each dye (see general instructions). As you may be using 2,3,or 4 dyes you will not need much of each. The ideal container is a squeeze bottle like some sauces come in. It needs to have a small hole so that you have a good control over how much dye comes out. If you are after large patches then a spray bottle with a narrow spray is ideal.

There are two schools on how to apply the dye one is to put it on to dry fabric the other onto already wet fabric. We prefer the dry method as the dye does not tend to bleed so much. Just lay your fabric out and apply the dye one colour at a time in spots, lines, random, what ever takes your fancy. The trick is to get the colours to blend were they meet without getting unpleasant shades. Don't put on too much dye, any more than the fabric can absorb is wasted & if there is too much the colours will run into one another.

Once you have the effect you want place it in a plastic bag or lay the fabric on a sheet of plastic and roll it up then leave for 24 hours or over night. As the there is no heat during this process it is much harder for the dye to take effect, hence the time required to make it set.
Remove the fabric from the plastic and wash in plenty of water to remove all the unused dye. You can now dry the fabric.

Once all colours are applied allow fabric to dry fully first, then rinse in cold water.

Batik & Tie Dye
Batik & Tie dye are similar. The purpose is to dye the fabric in some spots whilst stopping the dye reaching other areas. Tie dyeing is done by screwing up the fabric and placing elastic bands on some parts. This stops the dye from reaching the fabric whilst you dye it using the Immersion dye method. When the dye is rinsed out the elastic bands are removed to expose the undyed fabric.

These undyed areas can now have dye applied using the direct application method or the fabric can be immersion dyed again in a different colour. This mean that some of the fabric will only have been dyed once and be a single colour whilst the rest will have been dyed twice and be a combination of two colours. True batik dyeing is when wax or some similar substance is applied to the material to inhibit the dye. Wax and fur fabric are not a good combination so other methods must be used.

One is to thicken the dye using Seaweed thickener, this mean the dye is thick and does not soak in so easily giving you more control.

You can reverse dye using bleach or dye remover to produce patchy or uneven colour. Once you have dyed your fabric spray it with bleach, this will remove or fade the colour. As soon as you have the required effect wash out the bleach. If you wet just the tips of the fur with bleach it is possible to create white tips. Note bleach will rot fabric very quickly you need to be fast get your effect and wash it out as soon as you can.
