About Us

Beary Cheap Bear Supplies have been established since 1994. As with many crafts our mail order business grew from a hobby in the Australian Bush. Read the story of our early days.

Immersion dyeing is the easiest and most common method to create new colours. It is not unlike hand washing, it just takes a little longer but can be very rewarding. Try our new "Mo-Dye" specially formulated for mohair.

Choose a dyeing vat (bucket or laundery sink) that is big enough to hold your fabric with enough room to move it around freely, without sticking. The most common problems with dyeing are caused by using a container that is too small.

Heat up your water (make sure you have enough to cover your fabric completely). When it is near boiling pour into the dye vat. It is sufficent to run a 1/2 bucket of the hottest water you can then pour in a kettle of boiling water. Add the required amount of dye mixture that you have pre-mixed (see general insructions). Do a test piece before putting in your fabric even a piece of the salvage will give you a good idea of how the dye will take.

Put the wet fabric into the dye vat completely immersing it, and stir constantly for the first 5 mins. Make sure your stirring stick is clean, if you have used the same stick for another coloured dye it may spoil your new colour. Move the fabric around and turn it over while you are stirring. Keep the dye solution moving through the fabric to make sure all the fabric comes into contact with fresh solution. Not stirring will cause the fabric to dye unevenly. Sometimes the fabric wants to float, this is caused by air trapped inside, just keep pushing it under the solution until the air is released.

You should leave the fabric in the dye for 30mins, stirring regularly. It can be left for upto 2 hours however once the dye has been taken up not much happens.

Remove the fabric from dye vat and rinse in cold water. Hang out to dry or you can tumble dry the fabric which will fluff up the pile and make the fur feel thicker.

Mohair is a natural fiber of Angora Goats which can be sourced from many different regions of the world. Goats raised in Turkey will produce different fibre to goats from Spain. This difference may not be visable but can effect the way the dye takes to the fibre. It is for this reason plus slight variation in dyeing proceedure that colour will vary from fabric to fabric. The more care you take in measuring your dye, recording exactly how long and the temperature used the easier it will be to repeat the process with the same results. Alternativly you can take the layback approach and be happy with the new shade you just acheived.
