The Low Cost Armature Alternative.

Length

Check the length of your Bendy Bit to see that it is the right length for the limbs of your bear, lay the joint disk and bendy bit on tag cut out limb to check length. In the arms it should be approx 1.5 to 3cm short of the end of the arm. In the leg the length will depend on what you want to do. If it is to help the bear stand, you will need to have it long enough to reach within 1.5 to 3cm of the toe. If you only require it to hold a bend in the leg, then it will only need to reach to the ankle.

If you need to shorten your Bendy Bit, it can be cut using the cutting jaws in a standard pair of Pliers or with a pair of Side Cutters. If you try using scissors, it is likely to damage them.

Installation

After checking the length, insert the Bendy Bit at the same time the joints are installed. Put the end that is to reach to the end of the limb into the joint opening first. Then insert the end that is to attach to the joint. This may require you to bend the armature to get this end in. You may find it easier if you put your joint opening closer to the joint than usual.

Pass your bolt or cotter pin through the eye of the Bendy Bit first, and then install your joint as usual.

When stuffing the limbs, make sure you keep the Bendy Bit in the centre of the limb and stuff evenly around it. A good wad of stuffing in the toe or hand will ensure that the end of the armature cannot be felt from the outside.

The stuffing should be soft to firm, but not hard, as this will restrict the ability to bend the limb. The firmer the bear is stuffed the stronger the Bendy Bit will need to be to overcome the stiffness.

If you are trying to get a limb to bend at 90degrees, you will have more success if the pattern is altered to have a bent limb before sewing up. Trying to overbend a limb is likely to cause puckering of the fabric.

Bendy Bit Armature is designed to hold a bear's plition in a particular pose. You can change the pose at will, however constant changes of pose over a short period are likely to cause fatigue of the metal in the armature and possible failure. It is not advisable to allow young children to play with bears fitted with armature, as it will not withstand constant use.

Armature should end 1.5 to 3cm short of end of limb, depending on size of bear - i.e. the smaller the bear the less distance required.
If armature is required to make bear stand, Bendy Bit will need to reach the foot of the bear.
If armature is required to bend leg, Bendy Bit need only reach into ankle.
Insert paw or foot end of Bendy Bit first.
Pass bolt or cotter pin through Bendy Bit first, than join as usual.
Bendy Bits successfully installed. Bear is now ready to stuff.
When stuffing, ensure that Bendy Bit is in the centre of the limb.
