"Leah" & her Emu Princess
by Sue Darbon (United Kingdom)
We receive some lovely photos for our "Show off Your Bear" section, & this is definitely one of our favourites!
Little Leah & her Emu Princess are just adorable. The workmanship in these 2 creatures is remarkable & we're absolutely in love with them!
The emu is made in our Chantilly Razzle fabric & Rose Pink Ultra Suede.
Leah is made in Feathered Mohair & is just 4" & her emu stands 9" tall. Thanks Sue, what a talented lady you are!!!

Dyeing with your Microwave!
Here's some inspiration from our favourite designer, Sindie Smith.
Sindie's been busy dying all sorts of ribbons & fabric with our Mo-Dye & Syn-Tint & her Microwave oven!
These dyes are terrific & suitable for a whole range of craft related ideas, not just fur fabrics.
Why not give it a go & see what you can achieve. Feel free to send us photos of your results!
Here's what Sindie did!!!

Dyeing Poly Cotton
"With the ribbons I wet a plate and sprinkled the different coloured dyes onto the plate so they merged a bit and then laid the ribbon onto the dye mix until it was thoroughly saturated. I then blasted it in the microwave for 30 seconds. I don't know if this is necessary, but hey, it worked for me! I think the results are very pretty"

Dyeing Silk Ribbon
"With the cotton fabric I wet it thoroughly, sprinkled different coloured dyes onto it and then squished it up before microwaving for 1 minute. The colours are much brighter in reality and I'm very pleased with what I achieved.".
Thanks Sindie, you've inspired us all!

In memory of "Saskia"
Last week, we received the email below advising us that another rescued moon bear "Saskia"
lost her battle with liver cancer and sadly, had to be euthanized during surgery.
Below is Jill's email.
Dear everyone, So sorry to pass on our sad news that Saskia was euthanised on the surgery table on Monday afternoon after our old enemy, liver cancer, had taken its toll. In circumstances not unlike Andrew, she began to slow up, lose weight and generally look under the weather.
A downturn at the weekend accelerated the decision to bring her in for anemergency health check. As soon as she was laid onto the surgery table it was clear that we werelooking at a sick bear. Here, our Resident Vet, Heather, summarises for your info

Marc gently touched Saskia's chin.

and saying goodbye

Rescued bear number 157, known to all as 'Saskia' was sadly put to sleep on 10th September 2007. Always a determined girl, Saskia had bravely masked many signs of the cancer that had invaded her liver. She continued to eat and play outside in the enclosure but her progressive weight loss became a concern to all at the China Bear Rescue Centre and she was anaesthetised for an examination. Sadly, tests showed an untreatable, aggressive cancer that had invaded almost all of her liver and progressed through to her chest. With this condition, Saskia's quality of life would quickly deteriorate, and so the difficult decision was made to put Saskia to sleep under anaesthesia. Such a sad time for the whole team when, once again, the life of such a majestic animal has ended prematurely, whilst the world is expected to believe that the free-drip method causes no harm. Like Andrew, Rhapsody and all those before, Saskia won't die in vain. Her story is already travelling far and wide as journalists on site covered her final hours, the 3.6kg tumour and her sad cremation.
My own lasting memory was watching her from the roof of House 9 for an hour or so on Sunday with our caring, dedicated bear workers. She spent a warm and peaceful afternoon by the pool, dozing gently whilst other bears played all around her - before leaving us all the next day.
RIP Saskia, a bear so loved and respected by your family in Chengdu, Jillx

& now for some good news!!
Two beautiful Moon Bears ("Mama" & "Moggy") are now safe and sound at last
in their new home at the new Animals Asia Bear Rescue Sanctuary in Vietnam.
|
|
|
|
Beautiful "Mama" awaits rescue after
four years in this cage.
|
Lovely "Moggy" waits patiently as Cath
prepares to give her a health check.
|
These two gorgeous girls spent almost four years in a cramped cage in the care of the Forest Protection Department
after being rescued from smugglers. Thankfully the FPD officers realised they could not provide the proper care for
the bears needed, so asked if Animals Asia could take them at their new Moon Bear Rescue Centre near Hanoi.
Of course, they said yes, and now the three mischievous cubs that joined the Centre in June have two foster mums!
